Whereas the predicted timescales of the rollout of CPG item
level tagging across the world vary greatly, the sequence of
events leading up to this is not contentious.
First, vehicles have been tagged and now cases and pallets are
being tagged under edicts from Wal-Mart, Albertsonfs,
Lowes, Best Buy, Tesco, Carrefour, Metro, the US Military etc.
These largely require suppliers to tag all these items by 2006
or so.
After that, item level CPG tagging will be the big issue. However, Wal-Mart have jumped the gun by asking for Type 2 (narcotic) drugs to be item level tagged in 2004, despite a lack of major trials or even consensus about frequencies etc.
The tags used on pallets and cases are not suitable as they are too big and expensive as shown in figure 2.
