Postal and courier services

Courier company DHL has placed an order for one million tags for postal packages prior to RFID labelling its full one billion postal packages yearly.

If its parent Deutsche Post follows suit, another 28 billion packages a year will be tagged.

Airport and airline

Las Vegas, Jacksonville and Hong Kong Airports have jointly ordered about 250 million over the next five years.

Delta Airlines has committed $25 million to a baggage tagging project and so on. In other words libraries and laundries are going to disappear into the rear view mirror as far as item level tagging is concerned because other applications, while still small in the order of things, will dwarf them.

Also note that this is not just a story about tagging everything in the supermarket - indeed that will be the last thing to happen and maybe not until 2020.
